It is a misconception that the shedding process in horses only begins when the hair falls. It actually starts weeks earlier without us realising it. What many people don't realise is that the change of coat is not triggered solely by rising temperatures, but is largely dependent on the length of daylight. As soon as the days get longer, shortly after the start of winter on 21 December, and our horses absorb more sunlight, there are changes in the hormone balance. For example, the release of the hormone melatonin reduces as the length of daylight increases and prepares the organism for the change from winter to summer coat without us noticing it directly.
However, the change from winter to summer coat is far more energy-intensive and consumes significantly more vital substances, which is why you should definitely provide your horse with targeted support during the coat change!
