Rabbits' digestion is one thing above all: sensitive! A balanced, adapted and species-appropriate diet is therefore essential for keeping these small rodents healthy. Rabbits' digestion is unique, as they have a so-called stuffed stomach. This means that the stomach is barely muscled and digestion is therefore dependent on a constant supply of crude fiber so that the food can be transported through the digestive tract. Rabbits are therefore “permanent eaters”, whereby high-quality hay should be the main source of food. An unbalanced diet with too little crude fiber or too much sugar quickly leads to digestive problems and life-threatening conditions such as gastrointestinal stasis. An adapted, species-appropriate diet is therefore vital for rabbits.

What should be on the rabbit's diet?
In addition to water and high-quality hay, various types of green food such as grasses, wild herbs, leafy vegetables or twigs should be included in their daily diet. Various vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes or fennel can also be fed. As a small treat in between meals, small rodents also enjoy different types of fruit or dry food. Particularly for sensitive rabbits, the choice of dry food should be a grain-free variety.
