Feed birds all year round - why?

Opinions differ on the question of whether feeding birds all year round is preferable to feeding them exclusively in winter. The fact is that the natural habitat and food supply of our native wild birds has changed so much that they need our help to counteract an increasing reduction in species diversity. First and foremost, therefore, it is our task to combat the causes and, where possible, to preserve or restore the natural habitat for our birds and insects. In addition, the supplementary feeding of our native wild birds can make a valuable contribution.

Especially during the summer months, a larger number of birds compete for natural food sources. In addition, from spring onwards there is a significantly increased demand for energy and nutrients due to breeding and rearing young birds - which even exceeds the energy requirement in winter.

We therefore consider wild bird feeding to be a sensible supplementary strategy both in times of food shortage during the winter months due to cold weather, and to supplement natural food sources during the warmer months of the year.

Which bird food is the best?

In our online store you can buy various volaris wild bird food suitable for year-round supplementary feeding. Which bird food you then explicitly order from us depends primarily on the bird species native to you and the season. A basic distinction is made between soft feeders such as robins, blackbirds, dunnocks and grain feeders such as finches, sparrows, bullfinches. Among the soft feeders, there are also bird species that eat grains in the winter months and are known as omnivores or mixed feeders. These include tits, woodpeckers, nuthatches.

  • Scatter Feed - In our scattered feed range, the volaris Forage offer a bird feed mix that attracts a wide range of bird species and, due to high proportions of sunflower seeds and peanuts, are particularly popular with granivores and omnivores during the winter months. On the other hand, we have deliberately avoided peanuts in our volaris SUMMER grains in order to reduce the risk of parent birds feeding too large grains to their brood during young bird rearing with this mixture of flakes and smaller seeds. We therefore recommend in the period from April - July to buy the volaris SUMMER grains as scatter feed.
  • Fat feed - Our volaris FAT grains is a flake-peanut mixture enriched with valuable milk thistle oil, which attracts especially the soft feeders as well as the mixed feeders due to the added raisins. The high fat content provides valuable energy and is therefore a nutritious supplementary feed both in the colder winter months and at the beginning of the breeding season.
  • Sunflower seeds - The classic among bird feeders, and rightly so! Sunflower seeds are incredibly popular with very many bird species and attract the dear fence guests in our garden or on our balcony throughout the year.
  • Dried Insects - Here you will find our volaris MEALWORMS dried, a delicacy for pure insectivores as well as soft food eaters and omnivores. Due to their dried form, mealworms are practical to handle all year round and, especially after prior soaking, provide a tasty and protein-rich supplementary food.
